W koncu udalo nam sie kupic nowe auto i zaplanowac wycieczke na wschod Boliwii, do krainy zwanej Chiquitania! Krotka zapowiedz tego, co nas czeka mielismy juz w San Xavier, jednej z szesciu barokowych misji jezuickich, ale tym razem nastawilismy sie nie na zwiedzanie kosciolow, a na odkrywanie cudow natury boliwijskich tropikow w prowincji Chiquitos.
A musicie wiedziec, ze La Gran Chiquitania* to naprawde niesamowite miejsce, obfitujace w malownicze krajobrazy: wzgorza, kolorowe skaly, jaskinie, wodospady a nawet gorace zrodla. Nie na darmo region ten jest nazywany ostatnim nieodkrytym rajem Ameryki Poludniowej!j Jest w czym wybierac, a wybor, szczegolnie dla turystow z ograniczonymi mozliwosciami czasowymi (lub finansowymi) jest trudny.
Nasz plan (ktory czesciowo ukladalismy na miejscu) wygladal nastepujaco:
1 dzien – wyjazd z Santa Cruz de la Sierra (9 rano), obiad w San Jose de Chiquitos polaczony ze zwiedzaniem kosciola (13-15), przyjazd do Santiago de Chiquitos i rozpoznanie (18.00).
Sama podroz, dzieki nowej drodze laczacej Santa Cruz (a raczej pobliski El Pailon) z Puerto Suarez (Ruta 4) graniczacym z Brazylia, wyniosla 6 godzin. Jednak krajobrazy, zwlaszcza po przystanku w San Jose, tak nas zachwycily, iz jechalismy dosyc powoli, co rusz omijajac krowy i jaszczurki przechodzace przez szose. Poczatek grudnia to rowniez sezon motyli, ktorych miliony lataja po okolicy, rozbijajac sie nieszczesliwie na maskach dosyc nielicznych samochodow (tubylcy byli na to przygotowani, bo wszyscy mieli zamontowana siatke:)
Niemal jak zlota polska jesien, a tak naprawde, to pobocze strawione przez czeste tu wypalanie traw.
La Torre de Chochis
Pewnie zastanawiacie sie, dlaczego nie podrozowalismy noca? Po pierwsze nie mielismy pojecia jak wyglada owa Ruta 4, a stan wiekszosci boliwijskich drog pozostawia wiele do zyczenia —> klik. Po drugie, boliwijscy kierowcy przewaznie jezdza jak szaleni, a wiekszosc wypadkow drogowych ma miejsce wlasnie po zmroku. Poza tym, na wlasne oczy widzielismy samochody i motocykle bez tylnych swiatel (rekordzista byla ciezarowka z jednym dzialajacym swiatlem z przodu), nie wspominajac juz o krowach, koniach i pieszych, ktorych czesto mozna bylo spotkac na drodze.
Brak tylnego swiatla to w Chiquitanii zaden problem…
* Do Chiqutanii mozna rowniez dotrzec autobusem i pociagiem, ktory zatrzymuje sie w San Jose de Chiquitos i Robore. Pociag nazywany jest ‘tren de muerte’ (pociag smiwrci), ale spokojnie, nie dlatego, ze jest tam tyle smiertelnych wypadkow, ale z powodu dlugiej, uciazliwej i nudnej przeprawy (szczegolnie noca, gdy nic nie widac za oknem). Santiago de Chiquitos znajduje sie 23 km od Robore, a do miasta prowadzi bardzo dobrze oznakowana droga. W tym miesjcu musze wspomniec, iz Ruta 4 jest chyba najlepsza szosa w Boliwii. Bez dziur i dobrze oznakowana. Ba! Moze nawet za dobrze, znakow jest tam bowiem tyle, ze moznaby bylo spokojnie oznaczyc nimi jeszcze na przyklad trase Santa Cruz – Trinidad. No ale, od przybytku glowa nie boli:)
2 dzien – spacer na El Mirador de Santiago rano i relaks w Aquas Calientes (goracych zrodlach) po poludniu.
3 dzien – przeprawa do El Mirador de Chochis i Santuario Mariano oraz … relaks w Aquas Calientes, po wczesniejszej niedoszlej probie dostania sie do Balnearios (basenow) w Robore.
4 dzien – powrot do Santa Cruz de la Sierra, podczas ktorego na nowo podziwialismy piekno Chiquitanii oraz, w miare zblizania sie do Santa Cruz, rozlegle pola pobliskich kolonii menonitow.
100 km/h to troche za szybko dla mennonickich powozow
Przyznam jednak, ze zobaczylismy niewiele. Bardzo niewiele. Przeliczylismy sie i z czasem, i z wlasna kondycja fizyczna, bowiem by dotrzec do wiekszosci atrakcji trzeba nastawic sie na pol lub calodniowe spacery/wspinaczki. Do tego trzeba doliczyc usluge profesjonaleng przewodnika, bez ktorego bardzo ciezko jest sie poruszac po okolicy, bo wiekszosc szlakow (procz Miradora w Santiago) jest niemal zupelnie nieoznakowana. Mozna na miejscu zakupic mapke (5 bs.) z lista atrakcji, hoteli i restauracji, ale w terenie jest ona bezuzyteczna.
Moglismy jednak rozplanowac nasza wycieczke troche inaczej, zwiedzajac Chochis w drodze powrotnej do Santa Cruz i w zamian spedzajac wiecej czasu na szlaku w Santiago de Chiquitos poprzedniego dnia. A jest w czym wybierac! Moglismy na przyklad zwiedzic:
- jaskinie z prehistorycznymi malowidlami naskalnymi Cuevas de Miserendino (choc prawde mowiac, nikt z nas obecnych nie jest milosnikiem wypraw do glebi ziemi)
- luk skalny ‘El Arco’
- lub jeden z wodospadow: ‘Las Pozas‘ czy ‘La Colina‘. Wiecej wodospadow znajduje sie w okolicach Robore (Totaizales, Chorro de San Luis, Cascada de los Helechos). Chcielismy takze wybrac sie do Motacu, miejsca polozonego o 12 km samochodem od Santiago, ale zrazilismy sie oferta napotkanego przewodnika, ktory zazyczyl sobie 300 bs. za te krotka wycieczke naszym wlasnym pojazdem!
A musicie wiedziec, ze oficjalna stawka przewodnikow w Chiquitanii wynosi od 150 do 200 bs. za dzien (w zaleznosci od intensywnosci zwiedzania).
Zakwaterowanie znalezlismy wlasnie w Santiago de Chiquitos, spokojnej malej wiosce – dawnej misji jezuickiej. Spokojnej w dzien, bo wieczorami na boisku odbywaly sie zawody siatkowki, przez co po pierwszej nocy zmienilismy hotel, ktory akurat mial wolne pokoje polozone daleko od drogi. Coz, sa wakacje, wiec mlodziez ma prawo do zabawy, a poza tym, lepszy sport niz siedzenie w barze czy przy komputerze. Ale z drugiej strony, my bylismy naprawde zmeczeni po naszych przygodach w terenie.
Mozemy wiec z czystym sumieniem polecic dwa hotele w Santiago de Chiquitos:
Hotel Beula – pieknie odrestaurowany acz nowoczesny ’boutique hotel’ na glownym placu. Pokoje male, ale przytulne z lazienka, klimatyzacja i lodowka.
Cena: za noc w pokoju 2-osobowy + sniadanie od 300 bs. (30 €).
Hotel Beula
Hotel dysponuje rowniez bardziej ekonomicznymi 4, 5 – osobowymi pokojami w odnawianym budynku po drugiej stronie ulicy, z lazienka i klimatyzacja. Ciekawa opcja dla grup.
Cena: 240 bs. za pokoj.
Zapewne cena podskoczy w gore za okolo 2 lata, kiedy budynek zostanie do konca odrestaurowany. Na razie troche straszy na zewnatrzm choc same pokoje sa doskonale wyposazone, klimatyczne i czyste (choc czasem moga sie tam przypaletac nieporzadane insekty).
Hostal Churapa – to doskonala opcja dla budzetowych podroznikow. Hostel ten prowadzony jest przez znajomego biologa i fotografa Steffena Reichle. Niestety, podczas naszego pobytu byl on w Niemczech, ale sympatyczna zaloga Churapy byla nam bardzo pomocna.
Cena pokoju 2-osobowego z lazienka – 200 bs. (+ 40bs. za klimatyzacje)
Pokoj jednosobowy z lazienka – 100 bs. (bez lazienki 75 bs.) Ceny uwzgledniaja sniadanie.

Hostel posiada rowniez duza restauracje, ktorej niestety nie mielismy okazji wyprobowac, ale ktora zachwycila nas swoja tradycyjna szata. Ceny od 20 do 50 bs.

* Restaurante 25 de Julio, gdzie zjedlismy dobry lunch. Pyszna zupa za 5 bs. (!) oraz sycace choc takie sobie ‘secundo’ za 10 bs. Polecam szzczegolnie swiezy sok z aceroli, od dzis moj ulubiony! (Acerola jest malym czerwonym owocem, przypominajacym zurawine, popularnym zarowno w Boliwii jak i w Brazylii.)
Aquas Calientes:
* Restaurante Ruta 4, w ktorej dwukrotnie zjedlismy kolacje. Wedlug nas najlepsza w okolicy. Dlaczego? Wszyscy polecali nam ‘Casa Blanca’ w Robore, ktora faktycznie wygldala pieknie, ale jedzenie nie odbiegalo daleko od standardow fast-foodu… Natomiast Ruta 4, kierowana przez sympatyczna Niemke, jest wzorcowa. Niepozorna z zewnatrz (znajduje sie turz przy drodze i wyglada jak postoj dla ciezarowek), w srodku przestronna i niezwykle czysta, co w Boliwii jest rzadkoscia. Restauracja poleca menu boliwijskie, najlepsze jakie dotychczas mialam okazje sprobowac. Polecam szczegolnie majadito seco i milanesa de pollo. Duze porcje, ceny od 35 bs.
Najlepsza restauracja w okolicy
* My odwiedzilismy prowincje Chiquitos, ale Chiquitania obejmuje jeszcze piec innych prowincji, w ktorych znajduje sie niezliczona ilosc parkow narodowych (np. Noel Kempf Mercado), czy boliwijski Pantanal przy granicy z Brazylia. Raj dla milosnikow natury i bogatych ekosostmow, od suchej sawanny po mokradla i deszczowe lasy Amazonii.
Mieszkancy Chiquitanii to Chiquitanas i Chiquitos (czikitos). Swoja nazwe zawdzieczaja oni hiszpanskim najezdzcom, ktorzy nazwali ich tak nie z powodu niskiego wzrostu, a niskich drzwi ich domostw. Region ten zamieszkuja takze plemiona Ayoreos, Guaranis i Guarayos. Wszystkich mieszkancow terenow tropikalnych okresla sie zas mianem Camba.
‘Ametauna’ to popularne slowo Chiquitano znaczace tyle co’chodz tu’. ‘Sirari’ to regionalne drzewo, z ktorego czerwonych nasion wytwarza sie piekna bizuterie.
W nastepnych wpisach postaram sie wam po kolei opowiedziec o poszczegonych atrakcjach, ktorych bylo nam dane ‘zasmakowac’. Uprzedzam – bedzie duzo zdjec!

In the end we bought a new car and were able to plan our trip to the east of Bolivia, the land called Chiquitania. We had already a taste of what was waiting for us in San Xavier, one of the many baroque Jesuit missions, but this time we didn’t want to explore the churches but to discover the wonders of nature in the tropical Bolivian province of Chiquitos.
And I have to tell you that La Gran Chiquitania is really an amazing place, rich in picturesque landscapes: hills, colourfull rocks, caves, waterfalls and even hot springs. No without the reason this region is called the last undiscovered paradise of South America! The choice, especially for tourists with limited time (or finances) is difficult.
Our plan (which we put together on the spot) looked as follows:
1st day – drive from Santa Cruz de la Sierra (9 am), lunch in San Jose de Chiquitos with church tour (13-15), arrival to Santiago de Chiquitos and reconnaissance of the village (18.00).
The trip, thanks to a new road linking Santa Cruz (or rather the nearby El Pailon) with the city of Puerto Suarez bordering with Brasil (Ruta 4) takes about six hours, but the landscapes, especially after San Jose, were so delightfull that we took it quite slowly, looking out for cows and lizards from time to time crossing the road :) The beginning of December is also the season of butterflies, whose millions are flying around, smashing into the cars (the locals were ready for it, because everyone had mounted a net on the grill :)

Surely you may wonder why didn’t we traveled by night? Firstly, we had no idea how the Ruta 4 looks like, and the roads condition in Bolivia isn’t the best —> click. Secondly, the Bolivian drivers usually drive like crazy, and most road accidents happens after dark. Besides, we’ve seen with our own eyes the cars and motorcycles without rear lights (record goes to the truck with one working light in the front), not to mention the cows, horses and pedestrians walking on the road.

* Chiqutania can also be reached by bus and train, which stops in San Jose de Chiquitos and Robore. The train is called ‘tren de muerte’ (death train), but don’t worry, not because there are many accidents, but rather for long, hard and quite boring travel (especially at night when there is nothing to see from the window). Santiago de Chiquitos is located 23 km from Robore, and the town is connected with a main road by very well marked path. In this place I have to mention that Ruta 4 is probably the best highway in Bolivia. Without the holes and well signposted. Bah! Maybe even too well, because there are so many traffic signs that they could suffice for another route – Santa Cruz – Trinidad for example. But after all, more it’s better than less!
2nd day – walk to El Mirador de Santiago in the morning and relax in Aquas Calientes (hot springs) in the afternoon.
3rd day – climb to El Mirador de Chochis and visiting the Sanctuario Mariano and … relaxing in Aquas Calientes after an earlier attempt of getting to Balnearios (Pools) in Robore.
4th day – return to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, admiring the beauty of Chiquitania once again and, as we were approaching Santa Cruz, extensive fields of nearby Mennonite colonies.
I must admit that we saw very little. Too little. We miscalculated the time and our own physical condition, because to get to the most attractions a half or a full day of walking / climbing is needed. You also have to add a service of a profesjonal guide, without whom it’s hard to move around, because the majority of trails (except Mirador of Santiago) are almost completely unmarked. There is a map available, listing all tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants (5 bs.), but it’s useless in the field.
We could plan our trip a little differently, sightseeing Chochis on a way back to Santa Cruz and instead spending more time in the area of Santiago de Chiquitos the day before. And there is so much to choose from! We could visit:
- the caves with prehistoric paintngs Cuevas de Miserendino (whose age is probably not yet confirmed but they seem very unique), although truly speaking, none of us is a fan of expeditions to the depths of the earth.
- rock arch El Arco
- one of the waterfalls Las Pozas or La Colina. There are more waterfalls located in the vicinity of Robore (Totaizales, Chorro de San Luis, Cascada de los Helechos). We also wanted to visit Motacu to see some interesting rock paintings, a place located 12 km drive from Santiago, but we vere discouraged by the guide who requested 300 bs. for such a short trip in our own car!
And you have to know that the official guides rates in Chiquitania is 150 to 200 bs. per day (depending on the intensity of the trip).
We booked our accommodation in Santiago de Chiquitos, a quiet little village, former Jesuit mission. Quiet during the day, because in the evenings the volleyball competitions were held in the centre, so after the first night we decided to change our booked hotel, to the other that had free rooms facing away from the road. Well, nowadays we have school holidays, so the teens have the right to have fun, and besides, doing sport is better than sitting in a bar or in the front of the computer. But we also needed a good night sleep after our adventures:)
After all, we can recommend two hotels in Santiago de Chiquitos:
Hotel Beula – beautifully restored yet modern ’boutique hotel’ on the corner of the main square. Rooms are small, but cozy with bathroom, air conditioning and refrigerator.
Price: doubble room + breakfast from 300 bs. (30 €) per night.

The hotel has also more economical 4, 5 – bed rooms in building across the street, with a bathroom and air conditioning. An interesting option for groups.
Price: 240 bs. for the room per night.
Probably the price will jump up in about two years, when the building will be fully restored. For now, it looks a bit frightening outside but the rooms themselves are very well equipped and clean (although sometimes one can find an insect in a bathroom).
Hostal Churapa – this is an excellent option for travelers on budget. This hostel is run by a friend, biologist and photographer Steffen Reichle. Unfortunately, during our stay he was in Germany, but friendly Churapa crew was really helpful.
Price: doubble room with bathroom – 200 bs. (+ 40bs. for air conditioning) per night.
Single room with bathroom – 100 bs. (without bathroom 75 bs.) Prices with breakfast.
Hostal Churapa
Bonus – 2 cute black dogs, which cling to people, sometimes accompanying them in their wanderings (more about it in the next post:) In previous hotel there is a beautiful cat who seems to live peacefully with the dogs.
Hostal Chrapa has also a large restaurant, which, unfortunately, we did’t have the opportunity to try out, but which delighted us with its traditional decor. Prices of traditional Bolivian menu start from 20 to 50 bs.
Other recommended restaurants:
Santiago de Chiquitos:
* Restaurante 25 de Julio, where we ate a good lunch. Delicious soup for 5 bs. (!) and filling ‘secundo’ for 10 bs. I would especially recommend fresh acerola juice, which is now my favorite! (Acerola is a very small Bolivian fruit also common in Brazil, about the size of a cranberry. It is soft inside and rather acidic.)
Aquas Calientes:
* Restaurante Ruta 4, in which you had the dinner (twice). According to us, the best in the area. Why? Everybody recommended ‘Casa Blanca‘ in Robore, which actuallylooks beautifully, but the food quality wasn’t far from a standard fast food place… Ruta 4 on the other hand, led by amiable German woman, is exemplary. Inconspicuous from the outside (can be found on the crossroad and looks like a tipical trucker stopover), it’s very spacious and clean inside, which is quite rare in Bolivia. The restaurant offers Bolivian menu, the best we’ve tried yet! I would recommend especially majadito seco and milanesa de pollo. Large portions, prices from 35 bs.
*We visited the province of Chiquitos, but Chiquitania includes also five other provinces with countless national parks (eg. Noel Kempf Mercado), or the Bolivian Pantanal on the border with Brazil. A paradise for nature and rich ecosystems lovers, with dry savannah, the wetlands and rain forests of the Amazon.
The inhabitants of Chiquitania are called Chiquitanas and Chiquitos. They owe its name to Spanish invaders, who called them so not because of their small posture but a low door of their homes. This region inhabit also tribes of Ayoreos, Guaranis and Guarayos. All the inhabitants of tropical lands are called Cambas.
‘Ametauna’ is a popular Chiquitano word that means ‘come over here’. ‘Sirari’ is a regional tree, from which red seeds the beautiful jewelry is produced.
